Here is a wine that shows the benefit of extra time in bottle. It’s just started to develop a faint hint of leather to supplement those lovely spices on the nose. Still showing some excellent savoury ripe plum and licorice characters on the palate. The oak and fruit balance is very good. Has the structure and substance to support further aging. Rich and flavoursome.

Perhaps it does not have the cachet of Margaret River Cabernet, but when you think about it there’s some good quality stuff out there. Cape Mentelle, Voyager Estate, Vasse Felix, Howard Park Leston and Juniper Estate all turn out some pretty smart Shiraz.
Showing some bottle age complexity with a savoury, undergrowth character that’s very attractive and then ripe berries, chocolate, spice and some aniseed - all working really well together. In the mouth full bodied with fine tannins offering an appropriately firm grip. Richly fruited, yet balanced and classy. It’s long, delicious and excellent to drink. I’m a big fan of this.

This vineyard was established by Wrights before being sold and re-emerging as Juniper Estate. Very intense shiraz fruit with immense power and fruit concentration. It’s beautifully elegant and stylish with a seamless mix of tannin, subtle oak and fruit on the palate. Love the smoky savoury aromas. 92/100

Reviewed: As one of the pioneering vineyards established in 1974 (sic), this winery is now producing a range of very good wines across the board. The 2004 shiraz exhibits a lovely nose of violets and blackberries with an altogether delicious mix of black fruits on the palate. Rich, elegant and long, this will be one for the cellar.

Reviewed: Another excellent wine from this producer right across the road from Vasse Felix. Winemaker Mark Messenger has been pumping out some terrific wines from these old vines and this stylish supple savoury wine of great poise is a beauty.

Reviewed: A strong wine; has the focus and depth which the Juniper Crossing lacks, even though it is only still medium-bodied; spicy, black cherry and blackberry fruits; fine tannins, good length. Screwcap.14° alc.

Reviewed: ‘Deep intense red, the 2004 was more lifted on the nose with ‘forest fruits’ and spice. Anise also comes through on the well structured palate, good fruit weight for a lean year and tannins persistent enough to make even Mick Jagger’s lips pucker. Well crafted.’
Spice Magazine, Winter 2007, Shiraz Notes Jason Boudville
Mark Messenger is one of THE talents in the west and here’s a stunning ’04 Shiraz to prove it. Not the variety that Margaret River is renowned for but he’s managed some brambly meaty characters, demi-glaze and gently toasty barrel notes. Breathes up with peppery berry fruits, terrific balance.

WBM 100, Shiraz & Blends tasting, Nick Stock, October 2008
This is an excellent, classic Margaret River cabernet from a coolish year. The savoury, red and dark berry flavours show no greenness and the oak / tannin structure is perfectly balanced. Cellar 5+ years. 13.9%
Highly Recommended. Gold
